Publisher John Grigg in Philadelphia, 1830.

Born in Thisted, Denmark on 12 August 1775, Malthe Conrad Bruun was born and raised to be a pastor, yet instead decided to attend classes at the University of Denmark when he was able. During this time he became a proud activist and noted supporter of the French Revolution and following the strict censorship laws put in place by Prince Frederick IV, Bruun was indicted for his pamphlets. Bruun then fled the country and went to Sweden. At some point during his time of exile, he began using his birth name as a part of his last name, now going by Malte-Brun. Malte-Brun began publishing maps in Paris, and went on to become one of the founders and first elected secretary of the Société de Géographie de Paris. He is most well known for his coinage of the terms “Oceania” and “Indo-China”. He passed away in Paris on December 14th, 1826.
