JOSEPH WILSON "J.W." LOWRY C. 1850 MAP OF PERSIA AND TARTARY ORIGINAL BLACK AND WHITE ENGRAVING

Map by J.W. Lowry
Published by Chapman and Hall, London.

Measuring approximately 12 ½” x 10”, this c. 1850s map is in great condition considering its age. This piece shows little to no signs of age discoloration or foxing, and the only visible damage to the piece is the bottom left corner, which is folded yet remains fully intact. This piece is in an original black and white condition, save for some minor red highlights. This piece is a cerographic, or wax engraving.

The map pictured is the one that you will receive.

Born on October 7th 1803, he was the son of Wilson Lowry, an engraver who raised him into the art, and cousin on his mother’s side to future British economist David Ricardo. From both of his parents he received an appreciation for both science and art, and he focused mainly on scientific topics in his publications. Some of his largest works are  Encyclopædia Metropolitana, engravings done of the London Bridge for Sir John Rennie, and journals for The Institution of Naval Architects and the Royal Geographical Society. He was appointed later on to the Geographical Survey of Great Britain and Ireland. Joseph Wilson Lowry died unmarried and without children in London on June 15th, 1879 at his home on Hampstead Road.

All items listed are from V&J Duncan in Savannah, GA. The shop began in 1983 with one tabletop of antique maps and has grown into a vast collection of old engravings, mezzotints, lithographs, photographs, old books, and antique prints. We have prints of architectural interest, birds, animals, botanicals, fashion, sporting scenes and tens of thousands of portraits. Our inventory also includes views and maps of Savannah and other cities, all U.S. states and most countries of the world. Visit us in Savannah, Georgia, or shop inventory here online.

All prints are rolled and shipped in a poster tube. Smaller prints will be shipped in a rigid media mail folder.
