Original Hand Colored 1699 Engraving Map of The Canary Islands ( Isles Canaries ) with Inset Of Madeira

The page is approximately 17 1/8”L x27”W, features an upper left corner inset of Madeira, and a glorious, bountiful cartouche. This map is not “new” or in “new” condition. It was printed in 1699 and is in fair condition considering its antique age. This map has minor discoloration, though does have slightly foxed and worn edges. Please examine all photos closely.

The map pictured is the one that you will receive.

Born in Northern France in December 1600, he was educated by Jesuits in Abbeville, where he would catch the attention of the First Duke of Richelieu with a map he was producing of Gaul at the age of eighteen. This would earn him the title of Royal Cartographer, sharing company with Kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Louis XIII preferred his company so much that when he would visit Abbeville, he would forgo any local lodging and stay with Sanson. At the end of his visit, he gave him the title Counsillor of State. One of his The time he was alive was a tumultuous one, he would lose his son and fellow cartographer Nicolas Jr. during The Fronde, a civil war between the Royals of France and its subjects. One of his most notable friends of his later years was Louis II de Bourbon, Prince of Condé ( Le Grand Condé/The Great Condé) , a French military leader. He would accuse a fellow Jesuit of plagiarization of his work, having produced multiple influential works by the time of this accusation in 1647. Nicolas Sanson died in 1667, succeeded by two of his younger sons as geographers for the King. He would further influence French mapmaking through 1700 through his sons, his nephew Pierre Duval, and a successor, Hubert Jalliot, who would compile some of his works into an atlas.

All items listed are from V&J Duncan in Savannah, GA. The shop began in 1983 with one tabletop of antique maps and has grown into a vast collection of old engravings, mezzotints, lithographs, photographs, old books, and antique prints. We have prints of architectural interest, birds, animals, botanicals, fashion, sporting scenes and tens of thousands of portraits.
